The answer is YES!

Dancers that take the summer off from weekly classes will find when they return in the fall that they have lost a lot of their flexibility, stamina, endurance, muscle memory, and execution of technical elements like jumps and turns. They may also be at the bottom of their class if the rest of their classmates took class all summer.

Summer session classes are a great way to improve your ability quickly. Without the need to learn choreography for a show, teachers are free to focus on technique and develop dancer’s individual strengths. Summer is a great time to try a new class, get serious, or improve overall health and wellness through dance training.

For questions regarding your dancer’s summer placements, please leave a message at 503.537.3902 or email me at Kristen@iheartcvda.com.

Hello CVDA family!

My name is Kimberly and I will begin teaching tap classes at CVDA starting in the summer session. I started taking tap as a six year old and was in regular tap classes into my twenties. I also competed as a tapper. I taught recreational and competition tap classes at CVDA for 7 years, and now, after having a two-year break from teaching tap classes, I feel refreshed, renewed, and more than ready to come back full swing. My main goals for the tap program are to promote coordination, confidence, structure, and a love for tap.

There are many benefits gained from taking tap classes. Tapping is very similar to playing a musical instrument in that a person must keep a certain rhythm and stay within a particular tempo. It stimulates the math brain as well as the artistic brain and does wonders for a person’s coordination and musicality. There is a place for everyone in tap, even if you feel inflexible, out of shape, or uncoordinated. Along with the individual benefits of tap, working with a group to attain a certain beat is challenging and helps to develop an ear for rhythm and timing.

In each tap class, I plan to incorporate many different teaching styles to accommodate different learning types. I will integrate various tap techniques including echoing, drill time, freestyle, rhythm, speed, aerobic work, and ambidextrous movements. Students will get one on one attention as well as working within a group. They will have time to work independently in order to master steps they feel less comfortable with and to be able to ask questions they may feel nervous to ask in front of a class.

I am very excited about teaching tap classes again at CVDA, and look forward to putting my new ideas into play. I hope my love for tap will encourage others to give it a try, so they can gain as much from it as I have. So let’s tap, everyone!

Sincerely,

Kimberly Kjersten

What makes Chehalem Valley Dance Academy the best choice for my child?

At CVDA, we employ highly qualified and experienced instructors that share our mission and passion for dance. Our smaller class sizes allow students to get more individualized attention and instruction from teachers, and as a result progress at a faster level than in a large class environment. Our smaller class sizes also ensure that teachers can catch any problems before they turn into bad habits or improper technique.

What are private lessons?

Private lessons ensure that the student has the undivided attention of the teacher and can progress at a level suited to them individually. Private lessons are arranged with the instructor directly and cost is usually around $25/half hour.

Are parents allowed to watch classes?

We allow parents to watch during our designated Parent Watch Weeks throughout the school year only. It is important for the student to establish a relationship with the instructor that supports they are the authority figure in the class and this can only be done if the parent is not in the studio during class. Parents are welcome to wait in the lobby during the class if they would like to be nearby.

Why are your prices higher then other local studios and why shouldn’t I enroll my child in a cheaper option?

In many cases you will find that our teachers are more highly qualified than other local dance options and have a lot of teaching and performing experience. When choosing an educational activity for your child, the quality of instruction is very important. The environment of taking classes in a dance studio is more conducive to learning when compared to a home, garage, or other large obligatory space. There are little to no distractions at CVDA for the dancers and the instructors that teach with us are passionate about teaching and not just using the position as a side venture.

What is the registration fee for and do I have to pay it?

The registration fee covers administrative expenses and is paid by all students.

Do I have to pay with post-dated checks?

Yes. This policy is not flexible and we will not register a student without the receipt of post-dated checks.

How is CVDA different from other local studios?

As for other dance studio, we cannot comment on instructors or procedures. However, we do differ in a number of ways including that we have professional floating Marley dance floors; our studios are over 1000 sq. feet each, we have a full time office staff, and a large lobby to accommodate families and dancers between classes.
